In 2003 to 2004 Makai underwent an extensive complete refit to become a world class cruiser. This refit included aspects of the interior, exterior, electrical, plumbing, rigging, sails, & mechanical.
Everything was overbuilt.. The idea was, make it easy to handle, easy to maintain, and functional.
The interior of" Makai" was sanded to the max, newAllgrip paint was used on all the painted surfaces, andEpifanes varnish on all the wood, new setee cushions, and new mattresses for all the berths.
A new main salon table was custom built to house a full size electric piano. All interior lighting was replaced with the finest Perko fixtures, and allLED bulbs. The guest cabin has a double bunk bed setup, and a bathroom with full shower and tub.
Forward of the galleyis a utility room. This was designed for the Watermaker, washing machine, refrigeration compressor and pumps, and food and parts storage. It is designed for ease of maintenance for all the systems installed here. Storage for food and parts in there own seperate compartments.Foward of the utility room is the WORKSHOP! A full workshop complete with stainless steel workbenches and a large vise.
The forward bulkhead has two large doors to give access to the newly designed chain locker. It is all fiberglass, has its own drain, and is easy to cleanout and washdown. The aft stateroom. This has your typical exquisite Tiawanese wood carving and craftmanship, a large bed that can sleep up to 3 people comfortably, with 2 large aft windows that open for great ventalation... Mostly these windows are left open open, for the breeze, but in bad weather there are1/2" Lexan windows, with gaskets that dog down tight, making safe running in large following seas. This stateroom also has its ownprivate full bathroom.

Between 2003 and 2004 a massive complete refit was done, mere words cannot describe enough....This boat you must see to believe......New paint - Any teakwas sanded to bare wood, 10 coats of epoxy was then applied, then 4 coats of epoxy primer, then the All-grip paint. (for all purposes all the wood is encapsulated in Epoxy). All holes were drilled oversize, filled with West 406 epoxy, then re-drilled for the proper size.Replaced were the bow sprit, the bow pulpit, and the samson posts. The windlass is mounted on a Stainless Steel platform that straddles the bow sprit, with backing plates below decks. All nuts, bolts, and screws are 316 stainless, and they are all marked as such. All the teak strips were removed andall holesdrilled out, chamfered, and filled with West System Epoxy. The deck was refastened to the deck beams, and the deck beams to hull joint.....using 3 inch #14 SS screws, thena layer of fiberglass across the decks, to up under the cap rails, and up the wheelhouse sides. NO LEAKS ARE POSSIBLE !!!!!!!Windows were changed out to to American Window . These windows are fastened from the inside, for a no leak smooth finish on the outside. The front 2 windows are opening (great for ventilation) andhave 3/8 inch safety glass. All hatches have been changed to Bowmar Offshore type. Makai has the biggest 24 volt bow thruster Vetus makes. It will turnMakai on a dime. You will have NO PROBLEM backingupthis boat....The10 inch tube for thebow thruster prop has been relieved at the back, for zero resistancewhen moving forward....Under the cabin sole is where is where you will see the evidence of the time, effort, and thought put towards this refit. The first thing done was EVERYTHING was removed from the engine room. The hull was sanded and re-painted with a gray epoxy hull paint. All new electrical and plumbing, at this point the wiring and piping was easily accessed. Then newwater and fuel tanks were installed, foamed in, with new cleats and bulkheads. The main stringers for the engine were re-fiberglassed and new SS engine beds installed. The generator was installed on its own work platform for ease of maintaince. The forwardbulkhead houses all filters and valves sothat the fuel system is all in one place and simple to work. There is a fuel transfer pump to move fuel from one side to the other to balance the vessel.
There is also an oil transfer pump that makes changing the oil from the gensetor main engine a breeze. The shaft, stuffing box, cutlass bearing housing, and prop were all replaced 2003. The shaft was upsized from 1 1/2inch to1 3/4 inch. The stuffing box was replaced withthe PYI Shaft Seal dripless coupling.
The motor is new from American Marine Diesal in 2003.Its a Ford Lehman 140 hp. The exhaust system, lift muffler, and thru hull, were replaced at this time. All sea strainers and thru hulls were also replaced. The transmission is a Borg Warner, re-builtby Transmission Marine in Fort Laudedale in 2003, and has a 2 1/2 to 1 offset gear.
All fastners and hose clamps were replaced, withstainless steel and AWAB hose clampsrespectfully. The engine room is a mustsee work of art, it was well thought out for ease of up-keep and maintaince. To finish this off, installed were 6 Perko lights, which iluminate the whole engine room space. The bottom of Makai, each time she was hauled has been sanded and faired so she had a smooth uniform finish. In 1998 the bottom was sanded to the gelcoat, and8 coats of epoxy barrier coat applied. There are NO BLISTERS or imperfections on this bottom. All underwater metal have zincs that are regulary replaced.
All in all MAKAI is a great crusing live aboard boat, re-designed utilizing the owners 50 years of boating experience, to become a very strong, low maintaince, easy to take care of boat, that has been well loved and taken care of since completion..
