KZ 3, one of three "Plastic Fantastics" designed by Laurie Davidson, Bruce Farr and Ron Holland for the 1987 America''s Cup Challenge in Perth, Western Australia. Being the first 12 Metre yachts of GRP construction thedesigners were challenged bystrictscantling requirements.Almost 25 years later,KZ 3,KZ 5 and KZ 7have provento be the benchmark for stiffness andconstructional integrity with thebenefit of farless hull maintenance than their aluminum sisters.
KZ 3 commenceda complete refurbishment in2005 which continued on through optimization of her keel, rudder,new mast and entirely new sail wardrobe in 2007. She won the European Tour of Porto Cervo and St. Tropez during that summer and was leading the 2007 12 Metre World Championships before the series was abandoned.
She was chartered for the 2009 12 Metre World Championship and after a spirited, closely contestedseries, placedsecondto KZ 7.
All three Plastic Fantastics have been optimized to the limit; the"arms race" in the Grand Prix Division is over.With an up to date sail wardrobe and all systems functioning, no capital expenditure is required to get KZ 3 to the starting line in 2010.
